The fifth instalment in the Theodore Boone series sees young Theo facing his most captivating case yet. A school field trip to Washington, D. C., turns into an FBI-led hunt for accused murderer Pete Duffy when Theo spots him on the subway. Once again, crime-obsessed Theo finds himself eye-deep in a dangerous situation, but he can’t seem to pull himself away. He knows that if this case goes to court, it will be down to him to ensure that the killer is put behind bars once and for all.
The Fugitive is a wonderful read for young adults seeking murder, mystery and mistrials. Grisham expertly deals with various current issues such as the death trial, undocumented workers and unreliable witnesses in a slightly simplified setting, but without insulting the intelligence of his readers. In Theo Boone, the “kid lawyer”, Grisham reintroduces the reluctant teen hero into serious young adult fiction, using him to set an example for his readers without seeming preachy or condescending.
Fast-paced and captivating, this is the perfect introduction to courtroom drama for younger readers.
